Birthdays, Bindi Iriwin, and Crocodiles

It was my son’s birthday today, and we went to Australia Zoo for the day. In my opinion this is the best and the cleanest tourist attraction in Queensland. I love it! I’ve visited many times before and have enjoyed seeing the changes. This year we bought a season pass. Steve Irwin was a legend and my hero.

My son Jett (happy birthday) and daughter Lilly

Don't tell Maree I've put her photo online. Both of us always have a forced camera face!

There are cool animals to interact with throughout the park

Bindi about to feed a croc! The crocodile boys with her were alert

This was the best show I've seen. The crocodile was watching Wes, Steve's best mate and park manager, and the man beside Bindi. Terri and Robert are in the background with another crocodile handler; there were four handlers.

Terri feeding a rat to the croc. I missed the lunge out of the water. Wes had to feed him first to get him interested. The croc was interested in Wes.

I’m busy this week with appointments and writing, so my posts will be brief, but I’ve more photos to share. Have a good week. Talk soon, Simon.

  1. I had no idea crocodiles were featured this way, or approachable. When I lived in Florida, we often saw alligators in the area, but we stayed far away. I once saw a three-legged alligator (for real, not fictional) lunge up a hill toward a foolish tourist who didn't realize how fast they can move on land. Scary things.

  2. Patricia, crocodiles are very dangerous. They're slow on land, but within two metres of water you're at risk. People get killed by crocs every year here. These guys are professionals and have a unique world class show. Scary dudes!

  3. It looks like y'all had a great time! Love the pictures, especially the ones with the kangaroo. How cool to get that close.

  5. Simon, I love the look of your blog! It's so fresh and open looking.

Happy birthday to your son! I can't imagine a more exciting way for a child to spend their birthday. Those pictures are great.

Simon, I think a work of fiction by you would be so wonderful. With the work that you do, and the things that you experience, you could bring such a rich perspective to the story. And a compliment from Janet Reid? Simon, start plotting and give us a story! (Please)

  6. Helen, I cross post to a live journal blog, and I've got more comments about petting a kangaroo than I've had on any other story. I'm posting the wrong stuff! Thank you.

Hi Julie, I'm thinking about it. I'd be a real writer then! Thanks for the compliment.

  7. Post on what moves you and what you love to talk about, Simon. If that's kangaroos, go for it! Whatever your main subject, you can throw in other things once in a while.
